No. 243

Dec 09 . Work is concentrating on rebuilding of the n/s rear Wheel Arch.

Work has continued on replacing the nearside rear wheel-arch steel stress panels.

This has proved to be a difficult and time consuming process but eventually been successful.

Two new stress panels have been made.

Some of the steel structure above the wheel arch was in poor condition and has had to be replaced before fitting of the new panels.

Some accident damage to the floor immediately in front of the front bogie wheel, and also to the bottom part of the pillar in the region of the floor, has been repaired.

The new stress panels are now in the process of being fitted, as shown in the photo shown left.

The new wide steel channel can then be replaced. The steel angle which will go under it wll require it to be bent with a two foot radius at each end of the wheel arch.

No. 262

Dec 09. Work is concentrating on the renovation of the upper floor area above the fwd passenger door entrance.

Along the nearside the last new timber floor insert is to be fitted above and at the rear of the front door.

Examination of the angled foot at the base of the relevant pillar found that the two rear bolts of the base plate disappeared through the floor into the panel at the front door partition.

The outer aluminium panel above the door had to be removed, to find where the two forward bolts disappeared to, so discovering another problem which on looking further can be easily solved.

The inner steel panel (upper left) was, to put it mildly, well past its sell by date - badly corroded/rusted along its lower edge. A number of accessible rivets have been ground away. Things became a bit more involved, a length of Tee-bar was attached at the top of the panel carrying the flooring. The Tee-bar had, in a number of places above the door, rusted away, and to date the team were cutting a new panel and fitting a suitable piece of angle-iron to replace the cut out Tee-bar. Having assured it all went together the surfaces have been treated with Hammerite paint.

The view on the right shows the brackets securing the upper pillars to th floor deck.
